A nice surprise during a recent visit to Tate Britain!

When I was in London recently I went for my obligatory ‘art fix’ at Tate Britain…

As I was wandering through the many halls of old master paintings, I chanced upon this AMAZING painting!

It’s not only amazing because of its composition, its powerful story telling, its intricate details laden with symbolism. It is amazing because it was painted in 1856 by Philip H Calderon who was an RA… A pre-raphelite painter… ‘keeper of the Royal Academy’ ….AND my Great Great Uncle!

I knew it was in the Tate collection but I’ve never actually seen it and didn’t know it was currently on display. It was hanging alongside other greats of the time, like John Singer Sargent and John Everett Millais …

It was such a thrill!
