The second session of Weekly Evening Classes this year was planned to start on Tuesday 12th September 2023, but due to a unexpected busy calendar of events, the format has changed to a new 3 week course on Saturday afternoons from 30th September.
This will be the last course of the year and it's going to be a lot of fun!
About the course
Relaxed and sociable Saturday afternoon sessions that will run over 3 weeks to help you improve your painting whatever your starting point.
You'll gain a range of painting skills, an understanding of different materials, techniques and concepts, and build confidence for your own paintings.
Clear instruction with demos, along with practical exercises and learning through experimentation using acrylics and other media. Small group size so you get plenty of individual attention.
What you'll learn over the 3 weeks
- Why mark-making matters! Get energy and expression into your work.
- Tonal structure. The most critical element for successful paintings
- Mixing and using colour effectively. So you can control it and make an impact.
- Principles of composition and design and how to apply them. You may not even realise some of these!
- Layering and texture to add depth and interest to your paintings.
- The importance of edges. How hard & soft, lost & found edges can make or break a painting
- Adopting an artist's mindset so you can evaluate your own work and improve.
- Finding your style. Discover what lights you up and where to focus your efforts.
- (And other topics that may arise depending on the groups needs)
All the basic materials and equipment are provided but if you have your own items you would particularly like to use, and / or a personal sketchbook, then feel free to bring them with you. Complimentary tea and coffee available throughout each session.

£225 per person (for the whole 3 week course including all materials and refreshments)

Weekly painting sessions take place with me in my spacious and well equipped studio on the Pembrokeshire coast. SJB Fine Art Studio is located just off the main road between Newgale Beach, and the village of Solva.
All materials and equipment are provided, so all you need to do is turn up with a willingness to learn and have fun!
Complimentary refreshments are available throughout each session.
